What Is the Period Delay Service?

The Period Delay Service allows women to safely delay their menstrual cycle using period delay pills, most commonly containing norethisterone, a synthetic form of progesterone.

This hormone works by maintaining high progesterone levels in your body, which prevents the womb lining from shedding, therefore delaying your period until you stop taking the tablets.

You should begin taking the delay period pill 3 days before your expected period start date.

Your period will typically return 2–3 days after finishing the course.

Possible Reasons for Late Period

There are several possible reasons for a delayed menstrual period.

These can include high levels of stress, sudden weight changes, intense exercise, travel, changes in routine, certain medications, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or the natural transition into perimenopause.

If your period is consistently irregular or delayed, it will be worth speaking to a healthcare professional to rule out any underlying conditions.

Can Stress Delay Your Period?

Yes, stress can absolutely delay your period. Physical or emotional stress disrupts the body’s hormonal balance, particularly the hormones that regulate ovulation. This can delay or even temporarily stop your menstrual cycle.

According to the NHS Women’s Health Strategy (2024), over 38% of women in the UK reported experiencing menstrual irregularities in 2023 due to stress or lifestyle changes.
